Short answer: most paver patios in the Sacramento area land somewhere between about $15 and $30 per square foot installed, and a full backyard project with demolition, drainage, steps or a fire pit runs well above that. The rest of this guide explains where your yard will fall in that range and why.
Published price ranges
National cost guides put installed paver patios at roughly $8 to $24 per square foot, with a typical 280-square-foot patio around $3,350 nationally. Sacramento runs above the national average. A Sacramento-specific estimate put standard concrete pavers on a 4-inch compacted base at $15 to $18 per square foot, plus $4 to $6 per square foot to tear out an old patio. That figure is from 2022, and labor and material prices have gone up since.
For a typical Sacramento backyard patio of 300 to 500 square feet, that puts the patio itself in the high four to low five figures before any extras.
What pushes the price up
- Tear-out. Removing an old slab, pavers or root-lifted concrete and hauling it away adds cost per square foot and usually a day or two of labor.
- Base depth. Sacramento's expansive clay needs a deeper, well-compacted base than sandy soil does. Areas that take a car or a hot tub need even more.
- Drainage. Flat lots often need a drain or regrading so water moves away from the house. That work is cheap compared to fixing a foundation problem later.
- Access. If equipment cannot get into the backyard, base rock and pavers move by wheelbarrow, which takes longer.
- Shape and pattern. Curves, borders and complex patterns mean more cutting and more waste.
- Add-ons. Seat walls, steps, a fire pit, lighting or an outdoor kitchen island each add their own cost.
What keeps it reasonable
- Simple rectangles with one paver style.
- Good equipment access through a side gate.
- No old slab to remove.
- Building the base right the first time, so you are not paying to rebuild a sunken patio in five years.
Typical totals we see
On our own jobs, a patio or walkway on its own usually starts near $10K. Once you add tear-out, walls, a fire feature or a kitchen and treat it as a complete backyard, most projects fall somewhere in the $20K to $60K range. Size, drainage and access decide where yours lands.
How to get an accurate number
A per-square-foot price is a starting point, not a quote. The only way to know your cost is to have someone measure, check the soil and slope, and look at access. Our estimates are free, and you get a written scope with options so you can compare a basic, mid and full version of the project.
