Why Sacramento yards need a deeper base

Much of the county sits on expansive clay. It swells when winter rain soaks in, then shrinks and cracks through the dry summer. Put pavers or a slab on a thin layer of sand over that clay and the movement comes straight through as dips, cracks and rocking stones.

The fix is not complicated, just easy to skip: dig out enough soil, compact the subgrade, bring in base rock and compact it in lifts, then slope the finished surface away from the house. That is what we check on every job.

Typical base depth

4 in. Walkways and garden paths
4–6 in. Patios and pool decks
8 in.+ Driveways and hot tub pads

Clay, slope and drainage can push these deeper. We set the depth at the estimate.

How it works

You deal with one person from the first visit to the last walkthrough.

  1. Free estimate at your home

We walk the yard with you, measure, check slope, drainage and access, and talk about how you want to use the space.

  2. A written scope and price

You get a clear scope with options to compare. On full backyard projects, you can see the design in 3D first.

  3. A licensed crew builds it

Your project goes to a licensed hardscape crew matched to the work. You keep one point of contact the whole way.

  4. Final walkthrough

We walk the finished job together and fix anything on the punch list before final payment.

See all questions

How much does a new patio or wall cost?

It depends on size, materials, demolition and access. Most patios and walkways start near $10K, and complete backyard builds usually fall in the $20K to $60K range. After a free visit you get a written price, so there are no surprises.

How long does a project take?

Most patios and walkways take a few working days once materials arrive. Retaining walls and full backyard projects usually take one to three weeks. We give you a schedule with your written scope.

Who actually does the work?

Every project is built by a crew licensed by the California Contractors State License Board, matched to the type of work. You deal with one point of contact from the first visit to the final walkthrough.

Do I need a permit or HOA approval?

Ground-level patios and walkways usually do not need a permit. Walls over 4 feet, covered patios and anything with new gas or electrical usually do. If your HOA needs drawings and product specs, we put them together.

Is the estimate really free?

Yes. The site visit and the written scope are free, and you are under no obligation to move forward.

Do you take small jobs?

We focus on hardscape projects rather than weekly maintenance or small repairs. Patios and walkways start around $10,000.
