If you have never had hardscape done, the process can feel like a black box. Here is how a typical project runs, from the first call to the final walkthrough.
1. First call and site visit
You tell us what you are thinking about. We set up a visit, usually within a few days, to walk the yard, measure, check slope and drainage, look at access and talk about how you want to use the space. Photos you text ahead of time help.
2. Written scope and price
You get a written scope that spells out exactly what is included, with options so you can compare a basic, mid and full version. Take your time. There is no pressure to decide on the spot.
3. Contract and scheduling
Once you choose an option, the work goes into a written contract with the licensed contractor building it. California home improvement contracts include a three-day right to cancel and a limit on the down payment. Then we schedule the start date and order materials.
4. Permits and HOA, if needed
Most ground-level patios and walkways do not need a permit. Taller retaining walls, patio covers and anything with gas or electrical usually do. If your HOA needs drawings and product specs, those get submitted before work starts.
5. The build
- Demo and excavation: remove old surfaces and dig to depth.
- Base: compact the subgrade and build up base rock in layers.
- Surface: set pavers, pour concrete or build walls.
- Finish: joints, edges, cleanup and any planting or lighting.
Most patios and walkways take a few working days once materials arrive. Retaining walls and full backyards usually take one to three weeks. Weather and permit timing can move that.
6. Final walkthrough
We walk the finished project with you and fix anything on the punch list before the final payment.
